How to Commission an Architectural Mosaic

Architectural mosaic can be as small as a curbside house number or as big a a building. Mosaics are water and weather-proof, so they make amazing additions to bathrooms, pools and gardens as well as walls, floors, and … well … you can imagine…

Mosaic is a slow, hand-made process, and therefore relatively expensive compared to other materials like paint.  Creating a large mosaic can take several months; therefore it is essential to begin the conversation with plenty of time to complete the project on time, on budget, and to the client’s specifications.

Here are the steps…

  1. Contact me. Let’s have a conversation. This is a free consultation. We will talk about vision, size, materials, method, transportation and installation. At the end of this conversation, I will email a rough estimate for cost and timeline.

  2. Design. I can fabricate a design that you already have (copyright issues cleared, of course) or I can work with you to make your own custom design. I charge an initial fee of 10% of the total budget (for example, a project that will be roughly $20,000 would have a $2,000 design fee) to work up three designs with sample materials. If the project goes forward, this becomes the first payment toward your total. I am happy to make design changes until the you are satisfied, but these entail a design change fee that depends on the amount of work. The design change fee is in addition to the project total.

  3. Design and Budget. Once we settle on the perfect design, I make a full-scale, colored rendering along with a detailed budget.

  4. Mosaic begins! Upon approval of the full design, I order materials and start cutting. At this time, a 50% deposit is due. I will send photos of the progress. Design changes are possible along the way but may increase cost if they entail lost time and materials.

  5. Mosaic completed. When the last piece goes in, preparations for installation begin. 25% of the total price is due before installation.

  6. Transportation and Installation. If your mosaic is local, I will drive it to you. For shipping, I build the mosaic on flexible mesh or paper, cut it up, and then it is reconnected on site. The method of installation depends on where it will go – inside or out - walls, ceilings or floors. I can work with the client’s choice of installers or I can bring my own. The final 15% payment is due when the client is happy with their mosaic in its new home.
